Step 1 – Prepare your used clothing
- So what appropriate clothing do you think can be given to the Homeless? This can include but not limited to: top and bottom clothing, under clothing, slippers/sandals, shoes, socks, winter clothes, etc.
- The used clothes can easily be sourced, of course, from the comforts of your home, and not only that, you can get these from a nearby thrift shop if you really don’t have any proper old clothes to give away.
- Whether you’ve found your used clothes from a thrift shop or at home, be sure to wash them before handing these out. Sanitation is key!
- Clothing can be packed easily in plastic or paper bags. Ensure you’ve secured the packaging to avoid these from getting dirty.
Step 2 – Find the location of your recipients
- People who are homeless are really in unfortunate situations. The government can provide housing, however there are many factors they choose to stay at a specific locations — it could be for their livelihood, or they’re unwell mentally.
- If you’d wish to find for these people to help, you can initially ask your local social welfare office, the city hall, or the district office.
- Think out of the box! The people in need can also be found in parks, structures with roof on them like: sheds, roadside buildings, etc.
Step 3 – Approaching your recipients
- How do you approach a homeless person? Easier said than done, isn’t it? Awkward encounters are definitely uncomfortable, however helping someone in need can be fulfilling.
- First is to say hi and ask them how their day is going! You’ve got something for them, show it. You can say, “I have spare clothes I can give away. I was wondering if I can hand them over to you. Don’t worry! I’ve washed them clean.”
- Recipients can be doubtful at first, however if you show them how sincere you are in helping, then they will open up.
